There are a number of important things you can do to make using your computer a much better experience overall. Follow these handy hints to help.

  • Use well-known security software on your computer for better overall protection levels. The use of free security software as your primary protection isn't recommended as they don't include advanced protection features. Norton 360 is recommended.

  • Maintain your computer regularly by removing unwanted junk and repairing Windows Registry Errors with CCleaner. Optimise your drives with the built in Windows Defragment and Optimise Drives utility. CCleaner can be downloaded from the downloads section.

  • Download and install the latest versions of all your software, hardware drivers and firmware from the product manufacturer's support websites regularly. All are constantly being updated to add new features, improve performance, fix bugs, and patch security vulnerabilities.

  • A computer can always be repaired, no matter the condition. Purchasing a new computer isn't necessarily required just because it isn't working properly. It's usually cheaper to repair or upgrade in most cases.

  • Computers are considered out-of-date after 4-5 years. Tech companies usually release updated hardware products on a yearly basis and software support for these products will typically end after 3-4 years.

  • Performing an online Google search about your computer problem or error message may help you resolve the issue by yourself. Many helpful step-by-step guides are available online.

  • It is strongly advised to use a premium power board that includes surge protection as inexpensive basic ones may fail to shield your devices from significant power surges.

  • If you wish to keep certain data on your computer private, consider setting up a password, PIN, or biometrics for your Windows User Account. This will enhance both privacy and security when logging in.

  • Storing all your data on a single device is not advised due to potential hardware failure. You should store your data on at least 2 devices minimum to lower the risk of data loss. Setup Windows File History automatic backup onto an external USB hard disk drive. Online cloud storage services are another option.

  • If any of your storage devices are physically damaged or become faulty, you may need to enlist the services of a professional data recovery company. They can retrieve data from most storage devices, no matter what the condition. This is a very expensive procedure, so backup your data regularly.
